The golden age of the arcade game started in 1978 with the release of Space Invaders along with a cult phenomenon impact. Indeed, the invading alien hordes were the first ever iconic form of entertainment: thousands of hours of TV programs and hundreds of cultural exhibitions have been devoted to this generational icon of the 80’s which RJ-Romain Jerome encapsulated in its timepieces.
Six years ago, when RJ-Romain Jerome presented the first Space Invaders models, then launching a Games collection, little did everyone know that it would later become the brand’s biggest success. The collection consisted of two models, each limited to 78 pieces – echoing the game’s release year – and depicting the game’s famous scene illustrated in the dial, with coloured or white Super-LumiNova pixelated figures.
Today, RJ-Romain Jerome is introducing a new collection with two models each limited to 78 pieces. The Space Invaders Pop is equipped with a Swiss Made mechanical self-winding movement. The watches are available in either a 46 mm titanium case or a 40 mm steel case, and the pair will be released simultaneously.
The Moon Invader case features four functional ball-and-socket joints, cut like the pivoting “feet” of the lunar landing modules of the American lunar missions. These components hold the lugs of the rubber straps and enable the watch to adjust to all kinds of wrist sizes.
The pixelated 3D dial with bead-blasted and satin-brushed levels reveal the famous Space Invaders characters enhanced with stronger and brighter colours. The characters, in form of a laser cannon and aliens, have been machined one by one then filled by hand with cold enamel in green, white, purple, blue, orange and yellow. These Pop colours are the game’s most representative colours used over time.
New to the collection as well, the case back beholds a Space Invaders medallion standing in the middle of the stellar pattern extending to the black of the rubber strap. And to immerse completely into the Game universe, the watch box is designed like an arcade controller.
For all Super Mario fans the wait is finally over – RJ-Romain Jerome is now releasing the Super Mario Bros. collection. In honor of the game’s 30th anniversary (wow, aren’t we getting old!) RJ-Romain Jerome is adding the center piece to its Generational Icons collection. And another watch to the luxury “nostalgia” watches out there.
In a 46mm case the watchmaker has recreated the original Super Mario Bros. game from 1985. Nintendo’s legendary character Mario is dressed in his recognisable red shirt and blue overalls with his famous jump and iconic mushroom. These most symbolic elements of the game are eye-catchingly depicted on the dial and are all captured in the visual stye that captivaded more than one generation. And that’s hardly surprising, because Super Mario was one of the first video game characters that entered pop culture in a serious way while being “human”.
In order to accentuate the pixelation with perfect geometrical forms, the dial was built on a complex three layered plate with different finishes, either bead-blasted or drawn out for both the RJ-Romain Jerome monogram and the ground setting, which offers an overall 3D effect. All appliques, representing Super Mario, along with his mushroom, a cloud and bush, were hand-painted in cold enamel with the 30th anniversary colours and then set on the dial to add even more perspecitve to the ensemble.
The timepiece is presented in RJ-Romain Jerome’s distinctive Moon Invader case in titanium grade 5 with a black PVD-coating. The lugs are fitted with safety screws for optimal wrist adjustment. The watch is powered by the mechanical self-winding movement RJ001-A. It provides a power reserve of 42 hours as well as central hours and minutes. Central and minute hands are all to distract the wearer from the Super Mario scene.
To echo 1985, the year the game launched, the Super Mario Bros. watch is limited to 85 pieces. It will be officially introduced at the end of 2015.
RJ-Romain Jerome introduced a new Black edition of the emblematic Liberty-DNA timepiece. Following its initial launch in 2012, this new model pays tribute to the city that never sleeps and to the Lady of independence.
This original collection is the fruit of a collaboration between RJ-Romain Jerome, The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation and The Gold Leaf Corporation. The result is a unique creation complete with a black PVD-coated bronze bezel, echoing the true nature of The Statue of Liberty. Loyal to Bartholdi’s original design, the vision of “Liberty Enlightening the World” shines through in each detail of the watch. Housed in a 46mm black PVD-coated steel case, the bezel of the timepiece has been designed to perfectly sit over and protect the dial, as if it was wearing Miss Liberty’s famous crown. The spikes of the crown, thought to represent our planet’s seven continents, are illustrated here as time indicators, replacing the numerals on the dial and allowing the tips of the hands to appear through the crown’s “windows”. The famous dial composed of copper from the Statue of Liberty is now available in light grey and has been oxidized to recall the statue’s famous aesthetic.
The black Liberty-DNA is limited to 125 pieces as a nod to its big sister, the original Liberty-DNA model that celebrated Miss Liberty’s 125th Anniversary in 2012.
