L.U.C Perpetual T Spirit of the Chinese Zodiac

Pursuing its longstanding involvement in celebrating life’s finest milestones as well as honoring traditional Chinese arts, Chopard is taking things to a new level with an extraordinary new one-off creation: the L.U.C Perpetual T Spirit of the Chinese zodiac. Chopard has created an entirely hand-engraved rose gold case depicting the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac.

With this timepiece, Chopard is further extending the approach that has driven the manufacture to create a yearly edition of the L.U.C XP Urushi. This year, the entire Chinese zodiac is portrayed on the case middle of this stylised unique piece, with a black patina coating adorning rose gold. The 12 signs are individually represented using the champlevé engraving technique where little cavities are hollowed out before being filled with black patina. Of course, the 12 animals are ordered chronologically, symbolising the Chinese calendar. The tiger’s head is perched on the crown while his body fits the case. A dragon and a snake are coiled between the lugs.

The case houses a perpetual calendar, a tourbillon and an over one-week power reserve ensured by the four barrels of the Quattro system of the L.U.C claibre 02.15-L. The perpetual calendar  is indicating the complete date while taking account of the variable durations of the months, including leap years. The tourbillon sits enthroned at 6 o’clock on the dial, topped by a polished and blackened steel bridge. By constantly spinning on its axis, it releases the rate of the watch from the influence of gravity.
The solid gold dial of the L.U.C Perpetual T Spirit of the Chinese zodiac is adorned with a hand-engraved motif inspired by traditional Chinese iconography and also featured on the bezel and the buckle.

We’re sorry to say, that the L.U.C Perpetual T Spirit of the Chinese zodiac is a limited edition of one piece. It will be the object of an exclusive presentation to Asian collectors at a private exhibition in Beijing.

Classic and Functional: The Ulysse Nardin Classic Sonata

Ulysse Nardin combines classical beauty with pure functionality in its Classic Sonata. With this watch, mechanical complications are designed with the wearer in mind, the goal being a perfection fusion of form and function.

UlysseNardin_Classic_Sonata_3

The Classic Sonata features a classic design, because isn’t simplicity the ultimative form of sophistication? And the mechanic complications this watch comes with are pared down to their most essential form which makes this timepiece an ideal travel companion.
On the dial between 12 and 2 o’clock the alarm function is placed which wakes the user with a pleasant cathedral cime – an obvious upgrade to your usual smartphone alarm. In the center of the counter, the „countdown“ display of the last 12 hours allows to select a wake-up in the morning or in the afternoon. And a small display between 10 and 11 o’clock shows if the alarm is activated or not.
The Dual Time function ensures, that both home time and current time can be viewed simultaneously. Time zone adjustment can be made both forwards and backwards, just by using the pushers to change the position of the hour hand.
At the 4 o’clock position Ulysse Nardin has placed a big date in a double window. The dial is protected by a anti-reflective sapphire crystal.

The Ulysse Nardin Classic Sonata is powered by the in-house calibre UN-67. This automatic movement drives hours, minutes and seconds, the alarm function and the Dual Time function as well as the big date. It also guarantees a 42 hour power reserve when fully wound.

The Classic Sonata is available in two editions: in eternal black and a rose gold case or in stainless steel with blue markers. The cases measure 44 millimetres in diameter and are water resistant to 30 metres. The sapphire crystal case back allows to look inside the movement with its beautiful complications.

More Excellence at Glashütte Original: New Senator Watches

Recently, Glashütte Original launched two new models expanding its new Senator Excellence line: the Senator Excellence Panorama Date and the Senator Excellence Panorama Date Moon Phase. With the introduction of the new manufactory Calibre 36 Glashütte Original laid the cornerstone for a new generation of in-house timepieces. And the two new models are fitting in the collection quite nicely.

The Senator Excellence Panorama places the watchmaker’s well-known date display at centre stage. The secret of its exceptional legibility lies in the mounting of two concentric display discs on the same level, which makes it possible to present the two numerals comprising the date without the central separation bar. A precise jumping mechanism now enables even greater precision when the date changes at midnight. Refined details transform this useful function into a decorative stylistic element. A rounded window integrates the display into the dial in an elegant manner, and two steps enhance the impression of visual depth. The printed numerals are set off in deep black from the ivory-coloured ground.

The Senator Excellence Panorama Date Moon Phase combines the date display with a further characteristic element from Glashütte Original – the moon phase complication. In a dial window between 10 and 11 o’clock a curved moon travels its path in front of a starry, galvanic blues sky. The display is executed in Glashütte’s own dial manufactory.

Now. The calibre 36: precision, running time, stability and aesthetics – these attributes are promised by the new movement. Both functions are distinguished by an extremely stable construction principle and they also set new standards in terms of user friendliness. Not only the date, the moon phase as well can be adjusted using the crown. But 122 years will pass before the moon phase needs to be corrected by one day in order to achieve renewed conformance with the synodic month.
The calibre works at 4 Hz and comes with a power reserve of more than 100 hours.

Both models are presented in a 40 mm diameter case that is fashioned in red gold or stainless steel. Both cases feature polished and satin-brushed surfaces, the bezels are slim and house a domed sapphire crystal.
The silver-grained dials feature laser-cut, galvanic black hour indexes and matching railroad chapter rings. On the stainless steel model the minute numerals are also laser-cut and galvanized in black, while the red gold version features minute numerals printed in red.

All watches are come with a black alligator leather strap.

The 22nd Model for the 20th Anniversary: Patek Philippe Annual Calendar

In 2016, Patek Philippe’s Annual Calendar, which only needs to be corrected once a year, is celebrating its 20th anniversary. To commemorate this occasion, the manufacture has launched a new model of this complication. This watch (Ref. 5396) has been subtly reworked and refined and logically complements the 21 previous models that have been presented since 1996.

Patek_Philippe_Annual_Calendar_3

The new Patek Philippe Annual Calendar is available in white gold with a dark gray sunburst dial and in rose gold with a silvery white opaline dial. Both models look familiar yet at the same time appear to be totally new. Familiar because of the style elements that dominate the series for years, and new because these elements have never before been combined this way.
The round of the case merges gracefully with the strap lugs, and a smoothly polished bezel frames the dial. The sapphire-crystal glass is prominently cambered, endowing the watch with volume and a modern look. You can easily spot the Calatrava personality in this one, which is somewhat of the archetype of all classic round watches.

The dial features an in-line double aperture in the upper half that displays the day of the week on the left and the month on the right. The date display is positioned in a large aperture at 6 o’clock. Together with the double aperture, it frames the 24-hour subsidiary dial with the moon-phase display in the lower half of the dial to assure a visually balanced configuration.
This layout is reminiscent of Patek Philippe perpetual calendars from the 1940s and 50s. The main difference lies in the position of the analog date scale, which is occupied by the 24-hour dial, which doubles as a day/night indication in the Ref. 5396.
The time is indicated in classic fashion: A peripheral circle of small gold minute markers frames the Breguet numerals. They harmonize great with the Dauphine-style hour and minute hands as well as with the long, slender sweep seconds hand.

Patek_Philippe_Annual_Calendar_4

The heart of the Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Ref. 5396 is a self-winding mechanical movement that correctly displays the calendar information for an entire year. Much of the finesse of the caliber 324 S QA LU 24H is visible through the sapphire-crystal case back.

And: good news for everyone who fell in love with this gorgeous timepiece: This anniversary edition is not a limited one.
