Nomos Glashütte Celebrates 175 Years of Watchmaking History

This year, German watch manufacturer Nomos Glashütte is celebrating „175 Years of Watchmaking Glashütte“ and with that its own history. This celebration is certainly done in style and with haute horlogerie packaged in stainless steel in form of Lambda watches in enamel white, black, and blue limited edition.
The name Lambda comes from the world of mathematics where it stands for „intrinsic values“ – which are values that remain constant. In this anniversary edition, Nomos skillfully combines a new stainless steel case, a new size and new dials in enamel. The official name name of the series is „Lambda 175 Years Watchmaking Glashütte“. All models in this special edition celebrate the stunningly simple beauty of Nomos Glashütte watches.

The polished stainless steel case makes the Lambda extremely suitable for everyday wear. The case frames the dial with a slender bezel, while the transition from the side to the back is a radiodrome; that is, a curve with a shrinking radius. The lugs reflect the curved from the case as well. The latter presents itself with a diameter of 40.5 millimetres and is water-resistant up to 3 bar.
The enamel gloss of the dials offers an unusual optical depth; an effect enhanced by the curve of the dial and the sapphire crystal glass. Nomos Glashütte has equipped the Lambda with a complication – a power reserve indicator. It is a very prominent feature, as it sweeps an arc across the dial and tracks 84 hours, or three-an-a-half days, accurate to the hour. The four needle-thin hands give this watch model a graceful elegance – with finds featues reminiscent of a kinetic sculpture.

All three Lambda 175 Years Watchmaking Glashütte models are powered by the DUW 1001 calibre. This flat automatic movement with twin mainspring barrels is lavishly finished; the fine sunburst polishing on the three-quarter plate is not only eye-catchingly beautiful but also visible through the sapphire crystal case back.

All three versions of the Lambda 175 Years Watchmaking Glashütte are limited to 175 pieces per colour. The watches are completed by a leather strap.

Special Edition for the German Reunification from Sinn

Germany has just celebrated the 30th anniversary of German reunification on 3 Octorber 2020. And of course, German watchmaker Sinn is acknowledging this event with the release of a special edition, the U1 DE.
For Sinn, this historical date has also it’s own significance. For the watchmaker, it’s synonymous with the story of two companies which continue to actively embrace the merging of East and West to this Day. What is meant is the partnership between Sinn Spezialuhren and Sächsische Uhrentechnologie GmbH Glashütte, which was established in 1999.

To mark this special occasion, Sinn has designed the watch in Germany’s national colours. The colours black, red and gold, which have always been a symbol of German reunification are anchored in the constitution as the colours of the flag, go all the way back to the Wars of Liberation in 1813 and 1815. The black, red and gold flag appeared in its present-day form at the Hambach Festival of 1832 for the first time. The Reunification was celebrated with the raising of the German flag in front of the Reichstag building in Berlin. So there are more than enough reasons to immortalize the colors in this special edition.

Sinn equipped the U1 DE with a black housing made of German Submarine Steel. It comes in a diameter of 44 mm and with its screw-fastened case back and the screw-down crown (the latter is placed at 4 instead of 3 o’clock in order to prevent it from squeezing into the back of the hand) the watch provides a water-resistance of 100 bar. In addition, the case is also low pressure resistant.
The dial offers hours, minutes and seconds and the seconds hand comes in a very glossy gold. At 3 o’clock, you’ll find a small date window. To ensure the best readability under bad lighting conditions, Sinn has equipped all indexes and hands with luminous paint.

The Sinn U1 DE is powered by the calibre SW 200-1. This automatic movement operates at a fequency of 28.800 vph and guarantees high precision and a very reliable performance.

This special edition is also a limited edition of only 300 pieces. The watches can be fitted with either a leather, silicone or stainless steel bracelet, depending on the customer’s preference.

For the Anniversary: „Homage to F. A. Lange Special Edition

This year, A. Lange & Söhne presented three extraordinary models of the 1815 watch family with the epithet „Homage to F. A. Lange“. The three limited editions with cases made of honey gold as well as special movement decorations and dials are dedicated to Ferdinand A. Lange and the foundation of the manufactory 175 years ago.
IN 2020, A. Lange & Söhne is celebrating not only its 175th anniversary, but also the 30th anniversary of a courageous new beginning. Inspired by long-standing tradition, the watchmakers of A. Lange & Söhne today strive to advance precision watchmaking with innovative ideas and excellent craftsmanship. Their driving motivation of never standing still is also reflected in the new anniversary edition „Homage to F. A. Lange“.

The 1815 watch family, which bears the birth year of the founder in its name, is inspired by tradition and therefore primarily stands for the classic side of A. Lange & Söhne. The family’s design transports the spirit of the pocket watches of yesteryear to the mechanical wristwatches of today. Central to this are values such as distinguised restraint and the demand for precision.
The unifying element of the three new limited editions is the case material honey gold. Additionally, all three models are characterised by special movement decorations and a special dial.

The 1815 watch family, which bears the year of the founder’s birth in its name, is strongly inspired by the Trdition and thus stands above all for the classic side of A. Lange & Söhne. Their design transfers the spirit of the pocket watches of yesteryear to the mechanical wristwatches of today. Central to this are values such as forward-looking restraint and the pursuit of precision.
The unifying element of the three limited edition watches is the honey gold case material. Furthermore, all models are characterised by special movement decorations.

1815 Thin Honeygold „Homage to F. A. Lange“

With a diameter of only 38 millimetres, this timelessly elegant two-hand wtch is a mere 6.3 millimetres high. With Arabic numerals and a railway-track minute scale, the intricately hand-made enamel dial emphasises the design inspired by Lange pocket watches. This wristwatch is limited to 175 pieces.
The 1815 Thin Honeygold is powered by the in-house calibre L093.1. This hand-wound movement offers a power reserve of 72 hours.

1815 Rattrapante Honeygold „Homage to F. A. Lange“

This is the first watch from A. Lange & Söhne which places the classic complications of timekeepking – chronograph and rattrapante – in the spotlight in their pure forms. Additionally, for this watch (which is limited to 100 pieces) the honey gold case was used for the first time in combination with a black dial made from solid silver.
The 1815 Rattrapante Honeygold is powered by the new hand-wound calibre L101.2, which operates at a frequency of 3 Hz and offers excellent precision.

Tourbograph Perpetual Honeygold „Homage to F. A. Lange“

Only 50 pieces of the most complex timepiece of the new anniversary edition will be made. Two of its five complications – tourbillon and fusée-and-chain transmission – have the single purpose of further increasing the accuracy of the watch. Orchestrating the perfect interaction between chronograph, rattrapante and perpetual calendar is a major watchmaking challenge. The dial is made of black-rhodiumed honey gold with raised numerals and scales that stand out from the dark background as a ground relief.
The calibre L133.1 features not only elaborate finishes but also an outstanding complexity. It consists of 684 individual parts.

These limited watches from the special anniversary edition „Homage to F. A. Lange“ will undoubtedly quicken the pulse of every collector.

Colourful Hours with Junghans

Junghans is celebrating the 100th Bauhaus anniversary this year in a proper way. Not surprising, since hardly any school or style has influenced the Junghans models and their design as much as the Bauhaus. And, of course – how could it be otherwise – is celebrated with a special, limited edition watch. The Junghans Form A 100 Years Bauhaus is a tribute to the colour circle of Johannes Itten. As one of the first teachers at the State Bauhaus in Weimar, the Swiss painter, art theorist and art teacher developed a new theory of colour types and introduced it into his lessons. Accordingly, Junghans designed the hourly squares in the 12 colours of the Ittens colour circle.

The new colour type theory is based on the three primary colours blue, yellow and red, from which three new secondary colours emerge through mixing: orange, green and violet. The six tertiary colours are created by mixing a secondary colour with a primary colour. Johannes Itten’s colour circle consists of a total of 12 colours – as if he had already thought of a watch. The colours give the Form A a unique and colourful expression; perfect not only for artists. And not only for Bauhaus-friends and fans.

The Form A 100 Years Bauhaus is a timepiece with its own individual character and highest recognition value. It is powered by an automatic calibre, the J800.2. It shows hours, minutes and seconds via central hands and the date in a window at three o’clock. It also provides a power reserve of 38 hours. Since Junghans has equipped the Form A with a tinted mineral glass back, the owner can view the movement.
All this is built into a 39.3 mm stainless steel case. It is water resistant up to 5 bar and is worn on a stainless steel Milanaise bracelet.

Of course, Junghans delivers this special model in a special box, which picks up the Bauhaus theme again and frames each watch nicely.
The Form A 100 Years Bauhaus is limited to 1000 pieces and costs € 870.

Sporty: The New Ones from Nomos Glashütte

It’s summer, it’s time for more outdoor sports again. And because things can get a little rougher than expected fast, Nomos Glashütte has designed the new neomatics to be extra robust. However, this has no negative effect on the wonderful design – the neomatics are as slim and clear as ever.

The new line includes two Tangente Sport models and one Club Sport model. They are all extremely robust and able to meet a wide range of requirements. Nomos has designed extra strong cases and reinforced the seals. Sapphire crystals protect the watches from shock, impact and of course, water. The watches resemble small, perfect safes, but their proportions always remain extremely pleasant.
With a diameter of 42 mm, the watches are relatively large. The cases are water-resistant up to 1000 feet, which is also displayed on the 6 o’clock position on the dial. Which translates into a water resistance of 30 atm. However, this does not make the Tangente Sport and the Club Sport diver’s watches; for this, it would need an appropriate bezel.

While the Tangente Sport is available in two colour versions – white silver plated and blue black – there is only one version of the Club Sport dial: a deep dark black. By using a larger amount of Super-LumiNova, Nomos Glashütte has given the hours and hands more luminosity than ever before. At three o’clock there is a large date window and at the 6 o’clock position Nomos Glashütte has placed the running second.

All watches are driven by the DUW 6101 neomatic date calibre. This automatic in-house movement provides a power reserve of 42 hours.

Nomos Glashütte has specially redesigned the bands on which the three models come. The link works of art made of solid stainless steel are robust, durable and super-flat. The 145 Bauhaus-look steel parts are screwed together by hand. Nevertheless, the straps are easy to install, shorten or lengthen with a simple screwdriver. An additional fine adjustment by means of a spring bar helps with readjustment.

Autobahn: Nomos Glashütte in Pole Position

The newest addition to the collection of Nomos Glashütte, the Autobahn neomatik 41 date, was off to a flying start when introduced last spring. With its eclectic design, the watch not only generated a buzz, it was also nominated for the Red Dot Award – and won it in the end. It is the first big prize for this sporty automatic model – but not for Nomos Glashütte. Ten other models of the manufacturer are already honored with this esteemed prize which stands for innovative products with outstanding form, function, aesthetics and quality.
So let’s look at this new watch, which has – both aesthetically and technically – plenty to offer.

The curves of the dial and the sub-seconds entice the eye to explore this timepiece’s unfamiliar depths. The elongated date window at six o’clock is particularly easy to read, displaying three days at a glance. In addition, it is elegantly curved, integrating itself beautifully into the dial. The luminous ring of Super-LumiNova makes the Autobahn neomatik 41 date easily readable even at night. We also love the orange accents on the dial: the neomatik logo, the tip of the hour hand as well as the hand of the small seconds at 6 o’clock. The subdial of the latter is lowered very beautifully and ingeniously, creating more gentle curves and depth.

Within the slender yet robust stainless steel case, which boasts a diameter of 41 mm and a 10 atm water-resistance, ticks the second highly complex and highly precise neomatic caliber from Nomos Glashütte, this time with a date function: DUW 6101. Just like the first neomatik caliber, this one is ultra-slim – even with its self-winding mechanism and date function.
Along with the white silver-plated version, Autobahn neomatik 41 date also comes with dials in midnight blue and sports gray.

The Nomos Glashütte Autobahn neomatik 41 date is for everyone who loves clean lines, swift curves and perfectly executed surfaces. We are already convinced.

Sinn 936: An Elegant Tool Watch

Watches, designed as serious tools and instruments, can also be elegant, and Sinn is here to prove it. Its new chronograph, the 936 is no exception of that rule. It is highly functional while sporting a cool bicompax arrangement of the counters.
The chronograph 936 is a reliable time measurement instrument equipped with Tegiment-Technology and Magnetic Field Protection, because that’s how Sinn doe it. The dial is designed to increase clarity and readability.

The in-house chronograph movement SZ05 focuses on the stopwatch minute display with 60-second scale at 3 o’clock and running seconds at 9 o’clock. The advantage of this is that it does away with the necessity of adding stopwatch minutes, as is required with conventional 30-second stopwatch minute displays. Optimum readability is also ensured in the dark, as the indices, hour and minute hands are coated in luminous white.
This Sinn chronograph boasts clear design aesthetics expressed through elegant details such as the skeletonised hour and minute hands – both of which are rhodium coated and matt brushed. The counter rings for the stopwatch minutes and seconds have an iridescent effect, caused by a fine cental groove. The dial is protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.

The Sinn 936 sports a stainless steel case which is partly polished, partly satinised. It measures 43 mm in diameter. The case back is screwed and the crown is also screwable which results in a water-resistance of 10 bar and a resistance to low pressure as well.

The 936 is powered, like mentioned before, by the in-house SZ05, a chronograph automatic movement. It works with 28,800 semi-oscillations per hour, is shock resistant and anti-magnetic.
The watch can be purchased with a leather or silicone strap as well as with a stainless steel bracelet. Prices vary from 2.890 bis 3165€.

Anniversary Watch: Meister Chronoscope Terrassenbau

Junghans introduced an anniversary watch last month to mark the centenary of an architectural masterpiece by Philipp Jakob Manz. The terrace building in Schramberg is one of the most spectacular industrial buildings worldwide to be built on a sloping site. At the beginning of the 20th century there was an increasing requirement for workplaces in the already cramped valley in Schramberg. The nine-stepped terrace building was built directly on the slope, in less than two years. As a result, each watchmaker could benefit from direct daylight at the workplace. For decades, the building was the centerpiece of the Junghans factory.
2018 sees the monument to industrial architecture celebrates its 100th birthday, with 100 years of architectural history commemorated with a special timepiece – the limited edition Meister Chronoscope Terrassenbau.

Junghans offers two different versions of this watch and both incorporate the distinctive elements of the industrial monument in Schramberg into their design: the minute track of the dial reflects the meandering design of the wall decorations in the terrace building, whilst the dark green of the wall tiles in the stairways can be found in the alligator leather strap. The case back delivers a direct view of the architectural work: an engraved image of the terrace building.
Hours, minutes and the chronograph second are shown by central hands. The running second lies at 9 o’clock, the 30-minute-counter at 12 o’clock and the 12-hour-counter at 6 o’clock. The hands are coated with Lume and the dial is protected by a convex hard plexiglass with coating for enhanced scratch resistance.

Inside the Meister Chronoscope Terrassenbau watches works an automatic movement, the J880.1. It offers a power reserve of up to 48 hours. The cases feature a diameter of 40.7 mm and are water resistant up to 3 atm.

With a limited edition of 100 examples, the Meister Chronoscope Terrassenbau features a gold case. Inspiration for the champagne-coloured dial with the three matt silver subdials was the stairway of the terrace building, which are in beige and white. The stainless steel version is limited to 1,000 watches and has a silver-plated dial.

Glashütte Original Presents the New Sixties Collection

Sixties-Iconic-Square-Square_5-Group

Following the inaugural presentation of the Sixties Iconic Collection in 2015, Glashütte Original takes its tribute to iconic ’60s design to a new level. In parallel with the 67th Berlinale, the German watchmaker introduces a special collection of five square chronographs featuring distinctive dials: The Glashütte Sixties Iconic Square Collection.
Dynamic, distinctive, unforgettable – the 1960s made their mark with inspirational design in watchmaking, furniture, fashion and beyond, with geometric forms and innovative, colourful visuals. In the mid-sixties, Glashütte’s watchmakers launched the Spezimatic in a series of versions destined to become lasting icons of style. And now the popular design elements of the time like the square cushion shape, domed dials, curved hands, idiosyncratic Arabic numerals, inspired the Sixties Iconic Square Collection.

Sixties-Iconic-Square_Ocean_Fire

The dials are made by the Saxon manufacture’s own dialmakers in Pforzheim, Germany. The stunning colours and dial visuals take up iconic design elements first presented in a range of „Spezimatic“ models produced in the 1960s. Manufacturing these dials is a complex and time-consuming process and the dialmakers from Glashütte Original use original tools and authentic methods from the 1960s while paying obsessive attention to each of the steps. The application of coloured lacquers achieves precise hues and shading, from light centres to dark perimeters, known as the „dégradé effect“ – a finish found on every piece. The dials are given a galvanic base coat; layers of coloured lacquer are then added by hand in a series of subsequent steps and then, in a final step, black lacquer is carefully applied using a special spray gun. This technique produces an individual colour gradient on each dial.
Five colours give the models their names: Sixties Iconic Forest, Sixties Iconic Ocean, Sixties Iconic Graphite, Sixties Iconic Tangerine and Sixties Iconic Fire. Four of the five models are combined with a sunburst finish, while the fifth model, the Sixties Iconic Graphite, features an elaborate imprint instead.
The dials are protected by a sapphire crystal.

Sixties-Iconic-Square_Graphite

Every watch is powered by the manufacture automatic Calibre 39-34 chronograph, featuring central hours, minutes and chronograph seconds as well as a small second and a 30-minute counter. The movement works at a frequency of 4 Hz and provides a 40 hour power-reserve.
The five models also feature a distinctive square cushion shaped stainless steel case, measuring 41,35 x 41,35 mm and providing a water-resistance of 3 bar.

25 sets of the Sixties Iconic Square Collection will be available in Glashütte Original Boutiques and selected retailers worldwide.
